The North Island tennis championship tourney commenced at Palmerston North to-day. There were no surprises in the first a.nd second rounds. The entries were fair, though- disappointing. There are outside players from Auckland, Taranaki, Wanganui, Feilding, Wairarapa, Hawkes Bay, Wanganui and Wellington. The weather was fine, but sultry. The courts were fast. Rain is now falling. U.S.A. PROFESSIONALS.. NEW YORK, January 4. Tildcn defeated the Irish champion, Albert Burke, (5—3, 6—2, in a professional tennis match on Monday night. Richards beat Hunter 6—3, 6—4. Tilden and Hunter beat Richards and Boli Seller 6 3, I—2, I—o. lacoste ready to play, PARIS, January 5. Rene Lacoste has informed the Lawn Tennis Federation that his health is completely restored, and lie is willing to rejoin the Davis Cup team, add London dock strike —-
