Just before the holidays there was <.a appeal to the public, both in town and country, to help those in distress through lack of employment. The iesponse has not been at all oomim-n----snrate with the demands of the times. It is true that the Government provides money for relief work on a scale of rationed time, hut the amount, rs not equal to the weekly strain upon it, ami often the rationed time has to he still further curtailed. On such occasions, single men unemployed, can earn hut nine shillings on which to subsist. The married men arc curtailed proportionable, and many laideis must he very empty. With the iNonov provided by a few generous people before the holidays, some extra employment was provide.!, hut the monov is mow exhausted, and there is room for further assist,'tree from that source.
