FACED WITH RUIN
SERIOUS BUSH FIRES. (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, January 3. Tht* hack country is in dire need ot rain in many fire-swept areas. The Collar district, comprises a flame and smoke covered expanse with an oasis in which people and stock are crowded for relief, while hundreds of men arc fighting a grim battle against the insistent fires. Only vain, and that soon, can save many people from ruin. FIRES NOW OUT OF CONTROL. SYDNEY, Jan. 4. A Cobar message says that the bush fires are now comletely out of control only eighteen miles from the town of Weary, and, despairing settlers, after days of clour fighting, have given up hope, and are returning to the township. Only a deluge can save the situation, otherwise the area of over fifty square miles will lie laid waste.
