SYDNEY ELECTIONS

LOCAL BODY ACTIVITIES. (Australian Press Association.) SYDNEY, Jan. 3. More than two thousand candidates contested the local election yesterday in sixty-six municipalities and shires in the Cumberland County, comprising the Sydney .Metropolitan area, and the adjoining districts. Eour hundred of the candidates were Lang Planners, and forty-six Communists. The vote for the last named, the Communists was very small in all cases. The Lang Plan men failed badly almost everywhere. In the Redfern Borough, where there had been a Labour majority ;n control of the Council, the election resulted in six Labour and six Progressive candidates being rturned. At Waterloo Borough, where Labour had been in control for the past six years, not a single Lang candidate was returned. Marrickville replaced three Labour men with No-Partyites, one of the Labourites defeated being a member of the State Transport Trust. A Lang Planner won one seat in Drummoyne. His Party, however, failed to get one seat in Waverlv. Petersham Boropgh replaced the Labourites with Independents. - Ifie Lang Planners retained control at Newton, with seven out of .twelve. In Suburban Municipalities, they had little success. SOME LANGITE SUCCESSES SYDNEY. Jan. 8. Though the Municipal Election results are incomplete, it is clear that where the contest was run on the political party lines, ■ that Lang Planners scored In some industrial suburbs. In Glebe and Paddington it appears that they arc in full control. In the other districts, however, they were badly beaten. OVERSEAS SHIPPING.
