RUGBY TEST
SPRINGBOKS BEAT ENGLAND.
(United Press Association—By Eleetrio Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, Jan. 2. At Twickenham, South Africa heat England by seven to nil, at Rugby football. A GREAT GAME. (Received this day at 8 a.m.) LONDON, January 2. The Springboks maintaining their unbeaten international record won the key match of the tour defeating England in a terrific encounter filled with thrills, in the presence of seventy thousand at Twickenham. The Africans in their nineteenth game outweighted and outshoved the English pack, proving they had possession of much faster and nipper backs and far more effective tacticians. They a/Licked persistently and only dour defence and deadly tackling prevented a huge score. The visitors’ vigorous spoiling nullified every F/agiish effort to develop an attack. The home side never looked like crossing their line. The -Springboks fully deserved a larger margin. They got a lucky try in the first spell, Barr .the .English back neglecting to properly touch down, and enabled two alert Africans to score unmolested. The Springboks got a marvellous goal in the iast three minutes, when in semi-darkness Brand gathered a bail from a free kick and dropped a beautiful goal from 40 yards out., R. D. Gent in 'the “Sunday Times” says tho Springboks beat England fairly and squarely. They were the better side, if not quite to the extent of seven points. They won by the weight and stamina of their forwards and the Captaincy of Osier. PRESIDENTS VIEWS. At the dinner of 'the Rugby test teams, Walter- Pearce (President of the Rugby Union) expressed the opinion that the South Africans had demonstrated the value and necessity of greater physical fitness. He hoped the lesson would be remembered. Rugby was a spartan game, not a spectacle. It was the best antidote for the growing habit of riding and sitting about.
