MINING

ALEXANDER MINES. R.EEFTON, December 30. The following is the report from the Alexander Mines, Ltd., for the month of December:— The face in No. 3 North M’Vicnr drive is now 112 feet out iron) the crosscut, 80 feet of this distance being on stone averaging 99s over a width of 34 inches. The face shows stone of a width of 3 feet in the back and 2 feet in the bottom, and looks more promising than it has for tlie last 20 feet of driving. Gold has been seen in this stone. Excavating and other work has been carried out in new No. 4 crosscut for a new crosscut approximately 160 feet north of No. 3. The distance from the surface to cut the line of reef is about 300 feet.

Stuping has been carried out in the usual faces above No. 3 M’Vicar’s level the reef maintaining its size and producing a fair quantity of good battery ore.

At the battery preparations are being made to save the slimes and sands; 428 tins of stone have been sent to the battery and 400 tons have been crushed for a return of 3500 z 14dwt of melted gold. The cyanide plant treated 230 tons of sand for 96ozs of gold. Tlie total estimated value of this return is £1738 (exclusive of the premium on the sale of gold in London and premium on exchange.)
