OBITUARY

VETERAN EDITOR. CHARLES PRESTWICH SCOTT. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, January 1. The death has occurred? of Mr Charles Prestwich Scott, the veteran editor of the “Manchester Guardian,” at the age of eighty-five years. Charles Prestwjch Scott, the veteran editor of the “Manchester Guardian,” was born at- Bath in October, 184 Q, as the youngest son of Mr Russell Scott. Educated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, he graduated in 1869 with first- class honours. His long journalistic career was begun on the “Scotsman,” and in 1871 he went to the “Manchester Guardian,” which was owned by Mr J. E. Taylor, his brother-in-law. In 1872 he became editor, after tlie death of Mr Taylor in 1905, tlie pricipal proprietor. In 1895 he was returned to Paliament for the Leigh Division as a Liberal and represented that constituency till 1906. Mr Scott made the “Guardian” one of the leading newspapers of the world. He was a friend of Mr W. E. Gladstone, and political leaders often sought his counsel. Always in advance of the time, he had in many cases the satisfaction of seeing the realisation of the aims tor which he had worked.

Mr iSc-ott. consistently refused all honours, and never wrote a book, even of reminiscences. Very active physically, he rowed in his youth, and at eighty was still riding a bicycle, although he had given up his old practice of riding nightly to and from the office—five miles each way.
