In the Hawkts Bay match a good start was made in the Hawke Cup challenge against South Auckland, which commenced yesterday. The visitors compiled 317 in the first innings after batting attractively the greater part of the day. A feature of the innings was a brilliant display by M. O'Brien 123 not out, after being at the wickits 3 hours. The partnership between O'Brien and Heaney, who was caught on the boundary alter making 67, yielded 109 runs. E. Fmlayson made 31, and T . Cnvanagh 22. The best bowling tor South Auckland was registered by Barnett, two wickets jfor i 26 runs, Lissette two for 27 ai d Winger 3 for 63. South Auckland have 75 runs lor two wickets. S. E- Senior made 33 and N. Winger 36.
