DARING BURGLARY
HOTEL SAFE TAKEN. IBy Telegraph —Per Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, January 1. A daring robbery was committed early this morning nt the Club Hotel, Sydenham. Thieves carried off the hotel sale containing the takings for the last few days, and additional cash which was being carried over the holiday, owing to restricted hanking facilities. It is unknown how the robbery was committed, hut it is believed the thieves must have hidden in the building until the staff retired. Access to the office was gained by means of a small aperture, 14 inches by 10 inches, where the telephone is placed. It is believed a small man must have got through this hole and opened the office door from the inside. The thieves carried out the work silently, and awoke no.one in the house. Presumably, the safe was carried to some waiting vehicle, and the thieves got away unheard and unseen.
