Mr Edward MqGrady, of thevAmerican Federation of Labour, in a£&>cating Federal relief for the jobleaag told the Senate Committee that the .{.tonerican salary and wage carpers- the basis of the year 1929 pay, have; lost between eighteen and twenty " billion dollars in the year 1931. He estimated that there are 7,500,000 totally unemployed in the United States, and six million others who are working but three days weekly, or less. He stated that many are faced with starvation, and laid particular emphasis upon the difficulties of the mine workers in seven of the States. GOVERNMENT aid. NEW YORK, December 30, The United States Roman Catholic Hierarchy, for the first time, has formally announced its approval of Federal appropriations for the unemployed. The announcement is made with the presentation of the report on the matter of eighty -Bishops. The report aserted: “We are convinced that, owing to the yas(ness of the number who are suffering, Federal and State appropriations are s. necessary.? ’ The representative of the National Roman Catholic Welfare . Association presented the Bishops’ plea to the Senate.
