DEATH BY DROWNING
WAIKATO RIVER’S VICTIM. ( By Telegraph —ter tress Association) AUCKLAND-, December 29. Thomas Ngalia-, 27, married, was drowned- in the Waikato River at Rangiriri on Sunday afternoon. With two other,i, young Maoris, John Tuinni and Percy Dickson, lie started to race across - the river, which is about seven and a-h'alf chains wide at this point, with a very strong current. Tumai turned back, and the otner two got into * difficulties. Dickson called for help, but Ngalia was unable to help him, owing to his own extremity. Dickson eventually got ashore, hut Ngalia was carried away, and was seen to sink. His wife unsuccessfully tried to rescue him in a canoe. TRAGEDY AT PETONE. WELLINGTON, December 29. Three youths in a boat saw the body of a man floating in the water off Petone Beach at 2.5 p.m. to-day. Securing it with a- boathook, they draged it ashore, where artificial respiration was applied, but without success. Dr, R, Bakewell arrived at 2.25 p.m. and pronounced life extinct. The man, who was in a bathing suit, had been seen in the water after 10.30 a.m. UntiJ late this afternon he had not been definitely identified.
