'l'he Japanese contended that action was necessary owing to the Ch.nese massing forces, apparently with the intention to attack Hsinminfu, though it is really believed that tlie Japanese are intending ,to capture Kowpangtze as the preliminary to moving toward Chinehow. The Japanese, under General Tamon, began the offensive early this morning, engaging an armoured train in the vicinity of Panshan, which was ultimately completely- destroyed by aeroplane bombing. It is reported that fighting generally is proceeding in favour of the ■Japanese, but details are unavailable.
