WESTLAND RACING CLUB

SUMMER MEETING. ‘ FIRST DAY RESULTS! 9 The Westland Racing Club was favoured with a fine afternoon -on Boxing Day, Saturday last, after a showery day on Sunday and a threatening earl-.-morning. The weather cleared as the day wore on and the afternoon was bright and sunny. There was only a fair attendance present, the gate takings showing a drop of about £IOO on the first day last year. The racing was good. There were large fields, with the exception of two races, in which scratchings reduced the field to three and five respectively, but the Maiden had a field of fifteen and the Cup a good field of eleven runners There were some good finishes, that for the Stewards Handicap being specially close. The totalisator returns showed a substantial drop in spite of the good fields, Mr H. Lynch and his staff handling £4,741 for the afternoon as again £6,906 for the first day last year. The new grandstand and judgesstand were the subject of much favourable comment. The easy manner in which access was obtainable to the stand won particular favour, while a good view could be obtained of the wiiole course, from any portion cf the seating accommodation. The officials rooms and jockeys rooms were

equally convenient and comfortable, while the two booths are well placed with entrance by way both of front and rear of the stand, and each were comfortably arranged. The new judges’ box is a neat one, and the apparatus for announcing the winning numbers worked well, and showed to advantage. The Club are indebted to Mr H. T. Parry, Deputy .fudge, who generously made and donated this portion of the new structure. L’h ; two booths were carried .out on loh-ilf of the Club by Messrs J. J. Mclntosh and A. Nuncekivell, while the tea r00m,5 in charge of a Committee of lady supporters of the Club had a busy altarnoon. The Town Baind under Conductor O.
