TERRORIST PLOT
LIFE OF GOVERNOR OF PUNJAB IN DANGER. (United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) CALCUTTA, December 25. ' A terrorist plot against the life, of Sir Geoffrey Fitzhervey de Montmorency, Governor of the Punjab, was unearthed by the police, who raided a large number of houses in Multan, Lahore and other places. Many arrests were made. ft is recalled that Sir Geoffrey was wounded in terrorist outrage at the Univerity Hall, Lahore, in Christmas week last year. Grave unrest has been caused among the warlike tribesmen of the North-. West Frontier by the Congress. Seditious propaganda spread among the tribes has. resulted in the promulgation by the Government of India of three ordinances conferring special powers upon the area administration for the maintenance of law and order, under which the officials have been given power to arrest, detain and control suspected persons and also providing for the control of the supply of commodities for general use and the control of public utility services. Special criminal courts will be instituted and heavy penalties will be imposed on persons instigating non-payment of land and other revenues. The Frontier Commissioner is declaring certain associations, including the 'Congress, unlawful and condemns the activities of Abdul Gaffar Kh'an, known as the “Frontier Gandhi.” and his Red Shirts, which is a Communist organisation, the members of which are holding camp and manoeuvres in the Peshawar district and causing disaffection among border tribesmen.
