LOOKING BACK
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From “West Coast Times” for week ending December 26th., 1906.) S't. Mary's School: —The ajnnual concert in connection with the prepentation of prizes at St. Mary’s School took place last evening. The prizes were presented by the Mayor (Mr H, L. Michel) who said that the inspector had reported that the School’s progress compared more than favourably with that of any other school in Westland. Items on an enjoyable programme were given by Misses Tv. Foster, M. and V. Sullivan, A. Daly, and N. O’Connor, M. Tainui, M. Maher, M. Rooney, M. McKenna, E. Schroder, M. Dcvaney, B. Ha-rrop, M. Flaherty, L. Kortegast, K. McManus and H. Williams, Masters Devaney, Dooling, Ross, Toomey, Sargison (2), O’Connor and- Stopforth. The entertainment concluded with a comedy “The Man in the Street,” by the Hokitika Dramatic Club. The parts were taken by Miss Holmes, Messrs J. Breeze and A. R-oss. Trade Protection:—At a meeting of the West Coast Trade Protection Society it was decided by the Bakers, Butchers, Grocers, Drapers. Ironmongers and Boot bakers of Hokitika to discontinue giving Christmas presents for the future.
• Cass Square:—A meeting of the Cass Square Improvement Committee was held in the Acquatie Club Room last evening, Mr D. -T. Evans occupying the chair. It was reported that a large number of competitors were entering for the different events. Splendid nominations were received from Kumara and Greymouth for the fire brigade competition, and'also tor the bicycle races. Messrs F. Thompson, G. Davidson and W. Braddon were appointed judges, and Mi' J. J. Breeze starter for the .fire brigade events, and Mr A. Mahan liandicapper for the bicycle events. The ladies of the Kia Oia> Hockey Club will play a team representing the local Cricket Club.
Victoria High School: —The great event of the year of the children, the annual concert and presentation of prizes took place at the Princess Theatre last evening. The programme consisted of items by Misses Ethel Jones, Olive Breeze, Ethel Heenan, Fanny Evans, Josephine Pfeifer, Vera Rted man, Maisie Reynolds, M. Moore. Aileen Coull, Nancekivell- and Master.-, A. Woodlouse and Tom Williams. Ross Deep Levels : —The Committee of the Westland Mining League yesterday commenced a convass to find out what support would be afforded, in the flotation of a company to drain and work the Ross deep levels. About 1)01:0 shares were promised, and the canvassers hope to be able to get the required 5000 off. It is understood that between' five and six thousand shares have been taken up in" Ross Borough, which speaks volumes for the confidence of the people of our little southern town in the richness of the famous Ross Flat Deep Levels. Swimming:—-A very -successful meeting of ladies was held in the Aquatic Club rooms on Saturday evening for the purpose of forming a Swimming Club. Miss Mabin has kindly consented to teach members of the Club, and the following officers were elected: —Captain, Miss Mabin; Vice-Captain, Miss Ruby Bock: Secretary and Trea.s----u rer, Mi s-s 0. Linnemann. It was decided that the fees be 2 6d for each member.
Building Society:—A meeting of members of Nos. 1 and 2 Building Societies was held in the Town Hall last evening, Mr H. L. Michel presiding. The sum of £2OO in the No. 1 Society was disposed of by sale, realising £lO per hundred, while £IOO by ballot fell to Mrs S. H. Allen. In the No. 2 Society, £3OO by sale was taken by a previous purchaser at £45. Mr D. Booling and Mr E. H. Eobinson acted as scrutineers for the ballot, and Mr R. Parkinson drew the lucky nrnrble. "Dramatic Club : —-The Dramatic Club has been actively engaged rehearsing the drama “Dream Faces” and Comedv .“Churns” which are to be produced in the Theatre on Thursday evening. In the former the characters have ben allotted to Mrs Allen, Miss Holmes and Messrs J. J. Breeze and 'C. Pfeifer. TKe following will take part in the comedy, Misses Pansy Holmes. M. Holmes and Messrs F. Jacomb and Fred Sellers. Cricket:—The local Junior eleven played a match at Arahura on Saturday and was won by Hokitika by 76 runs. Batting first Hokitika, scored 107, Ecclesfield scoring 48 nad Wilson 23, while George took 6 for 21 for the home team. Arahura scored only 31, Sherman taking 7 wickets for 19 runs. The Bands:—Both the local bands—the Citizens,’ under Mr Bremand, and the Volunteer, under Mr Seymour —paraded the town on Christmas Eve and played .selections of Carols which were greatly enjoyed.
