The Gael arrived at Okuru on Tuesday morning at 9.45 o’clock but was unable to discharge cargo owing to rain.

In excavating a vacant section of land on the corner of Btond Street and Wakefield Street, Wellington for the purposes of a taxi-stand, workmen uncovered the totara piles of an old wharf, whjch.in pre-reclamation days ran seaward from Customhouse St. A peculiarity of these old piles is that some of them are substantially boxed in concrete, an unusual but very sound protection, as is shown by (he excellent state of preservation of the wood. The wharf which occupied this position was known at various times as Watt and Tysier's, Fitwherliert’s, Crawford’s. Pilcher’s and the Customs Wharf..

The possibilities of the creation of a market in New Zealand for tomato juice as a beverage were outlined to members of the Christchurch Tomato and Stone Fruit Grower’s Association in an address by Mr H. M. Taylor on Saturday evening. Mr Taylor stated that the use of tomato juice as a beverage was almost a universal one in the United States, from which he had just recently returned. It was rich in mineral salts, vegetable acids, and the vita mi ms necessary for proper growth and development. Tt prevented scurvy, was a protective food for bailies fed on pastured milk, quenched the thirst as effectively as water, and had an alkine reaction on the body. To create such a market in New Zealand would mean that a fresh outlet and a better price would be created for the large quantity of tomatoes that usually sold at a cheap rate. The success of such an industry would be a big thing for the tomato-growers of the Dominion.
