The Christmas clean up' by the Borough authorities is proving more complete than usual. Thanks to the assistance possible from the unemployed workers much extra work lias been possible, and by utilising horse and drays the footpaths have been receiving a much needed coat of gravel. Generally, very useful work has been carried out, and though it is the fashion to carp at blackberry cutting, the effect afterwards is more pleasing to the eye. Much has been done outside of tlie cutting and altogether tne streets present a more cleanly appearance. Tn fact the highways and byways of Hokitika are not- uncreditable to the residents, many of whom are now helping by attention to their frontages. The effort to assist in making the town beautiful thereby is greatly enhanced, and it would be plearing to find the practice more general in its application in the several streets. A good deal has been done, also, in the piping of gaping drains, but there is much more to be done in that respect. The action has removed eyesores in various parts, while at the same time creating a more sanitary state of affairs in the localities served. Tf the Council could extend this claiss of work it would be doing .a useful service to the community. It is to be hoped also the Council will be able to extend its tarsealing ope’itions this, season-. Now that’motor t affic is such a vog”e. the tar-<sea]ed roads help to diminish the dust nuisance, which is certainly serious on the chief roads patronised by motor traffic. Tar-sealing also minimises maintenance' costs, and with the cheap labour available now, much use-
ful work could be accomplished in regard to which the Council would reap tbe benefit later. The Council has also done well in the matter of motor control. The checking of motor traffic in Revell Street on Saturday evenings is a boon to the pedestrians who may walk in comfort. It should prove an advantage also to business people with the extra patronage drawn to the town on the principal shopping night of the week. Altogether it may be said the Borough Council has done a -great deal this year to earn the thanks and appreciation of the general public, and it is pleasant to recognise the good work.
