GREYMOUTH COMMITTEE
.DELIBERATIONS FOR RELIEF
A meeting of the Greymouth Unemployment Committee was held on Saturday, the Mayor, Mr J. W. Greensi a d-e, presiding. The committee' considered allocations for the local bodies, and noted that about- £670 was required to give all the persons entitled to relief assistance for the week. It was considered that those persons ■who would under ordinary circumstances stand down this week, should be given their allotment. The Secretary was instructed to send a telegram to the Unemployment Board, asking for a further sum of £2OO to meet the necessary cases. At the last meeting of the Committee the. Secretary reported that three‘applications from farmers were received and these were dealt with. It was then ascertained that six other applications had been forwarded to the County. Council, who decided to defer action until their next meeting. The names of these farmers were ; , J. Jamieson l(Boddytown), W. A. Burr (Ngahere), D. Armstrong (Ngahere), J. Mulcare (Ngahere), W. Delaney (Nelson Creek), and I>, A, James (Poerual. These oppb cations were approved by the special unemployment sub-committee four days later.
It was .stated that Mr J. Mulcare had been incorrect in remarks recently in. the press to the effect that there had been too much delay after application, had been made by farmers for development work under Scheme No. SA. The Secretary was instructed to communicate with the Unemployment Board at Wellington, and ascertain their attitude with regard to the men employed on farm work under the No. 5 scheme.
THE WAGE CUT. CHRISTCHURCH, December 19. Application for the exclusion of tho woollen mill workers from the operation of the general order of the Arbitration Court reducing wages by ten per cent.., was refused in a judgment of the Court made available to-day.
