It will be a happy issue if the fortunes of the Westland Racing Club are made good, by its summer race meeting which opens on Saturday next.* The Club has had an unusually bad run of luck, and the time must be ripe now for a change in the wheel of fortune. Certainly there are indications of it in the splendid acceptances received for the opening day In relation to nominations, the per. eentage of acceptance is, easily a re cord. In four events all horses enter' ed, accepted. While in three other events there was only one withdrawal. In the Cup there are eighteen acceptors, and the hack races have also attracted large fields, while the maiden race has brought out fifteen possible starters. For the eight events there are almost one hundred .horses accepted giving an average field of twelve for each event. With such ample material to work on-, the public should be attracted in force to enjoy the good -sport which should be provided. The Club deserves to reap n good reward. "The enterprise shown in rebuilding such a fine stand and appointments as now grace the racecourse. is much to be commended. The Club is a local institution which does much for the town in attracting the general public to the district, and providing a popular sport for the enjoyment & of patrons. The local meetings have certainly enjoyed a popular vogue for many years past, and now that the Club has to make a new beginning, as it were, its popularity is likely to be even greater than before. The members of the Club, we understand, have been much encouraged in their spirited enterprise by the whole hearted support of the public, and the very pract ; \1 assistance given by supporters following the late fire. The generous action shown lies placed the Club under an obligation it will be hard to repay, for without the ready help that was accorded, it would not ]jav© been possible to re-enter the

lists so soon. However, the help was forthcoming, and’the Club is now ready to begin business as usual, and with the usual patronage should do well, and set out to let: ieve the losses of the past. Good luck to the Club.
