CABIN AND TOURIST

NEW CLASSES ON LINERS. SHAW-SAVILL MOVE. Details are now available concerning the remodelling of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s passengers service between- England and New Zealand, which was announced by cable a fejv days ago. Commencing worn April next, each ot the Company s passenger liners will carry only one class of -passenger, thus providing greatly increased deck space. The Mataroa and Tamaroa will carry cabinclass passengers only, the- fares ranging from £72 to £B2 single, and £126 to £144 return. The lonic and Tainui will carry tourist class passengers only, the fares ranging from £3B to £65 single and £6B to £ll4 return, and they will have the distinction- of being the first liners in the Panama route to cater for this class of passenger. Cabin and tourist class travel are both comparatively new, especially to this part of the world. Cabin class was introduced i-nto the North Atlantic trade a few years - ago,, and came between the first and second classes. It has now almost completely superseded second class. The next innovation in that trade was tourist class, between second and third classes. This arso has met with great success. Originally the fare was just above the third-class rates, but the recent reduction in third-class Atlantic fares has placed it nearly midway between these two classes. On the Suez Canal route to Australia there also appears to be a gradual elimination of the second class and an increase in the tourist class. In the past few months four of the big mail liners have been devoted entirely to this class, while the two new ,p, and 0. turbo-electric liners have tourist as their lower class. In 1929 introduced cabin-class travel into their Panama Canal service, and they will now also have the distinction of commencing tourist class travel over this route.
