TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO,

> Struck gold—Messrs Fisher and party who were reported,to have struck good gold at Rimu on.'Monday were compelled to stop operations owing to the water proving troublesome. Rimu wore quite an animated appearance owing to the glowing reports which were current in connection with the find.- The ground has not been proved to any extent, though prospects are good. A number of men were soon on ithe ground when it became known that gold had been struck, and at present, there are plenty of: -men in the vicinity to take up the grounds. Fpi-hev developments will be awaited with interest, and it is hoped that the find will be of advantage to the (district.

Visit of Irish delegates.—A meeting of those interested in according a fitting reception to the Irish Envoys now visiting the Colony, and one of whom, Mr (Deviin, is expected to arrive in Hokitika on the was held at the Town Hall last evening, the Mayor, Mr H. L. Michel, presiding. The Mayor outlined the reason for the meeting ■being called. On the motion ot Messrs J. McSherry and .T. Toomey the following committee was appointed to make arrangements for Mr Devlin’s reception: — (Rev. Father Aubrey, Messrs H. L. (Michel, J. Toomey, J. Mandl, M. Cashman, P. J. Dunne, J. Downie, E. O’Connor, T. J. McGuigan, F. Maher. H. Burger, J- Mctherry, D. Burke, M. JDwan, ’ J. J. Breeze, D. Toomey, J. Cavanagh, G. Shaw-, F. P. Sellers, J. (Sullivan and R, McMillan. First Westliand Rifles.—The First (Westland Rifles held their parade last evening, Captain McGregor in command, (Lieutenants Winchester and Parkhih and Surgeon Captains Teichelmann and Macandrew being also on parade. There was a good matter of the company who marched to Gibson Quay where they were exercised in skirmishing and company movements. Mining League.—A meeting of the (Mining league .was held at the County Chambers last evening. There was a large (attendance, and the County Chaiinian (T. V. Byrne, Esq) presided. Re the subject of she battery at the Wilberforce, 'it was decided that the offer of the" Government to take out and test stone be received with thanks, and that |he clahpa owners be invited to get some

stone out at once. The offer of Messrs James Howatt and party (3 men) to prospect at McQuilkan Creek and Arahura river at 35s per week per rnan was accepted. The Ross deep levels scheme was taken up enthusiast!caily. Cricket.—The following team will represent the Civil Servants in a cricket match with the Hokitika Club to-day:— Ecclesfield (captain), Aoheson, Bennett, | Isdell, Follfiy, Pfeifer, Seymour, Sand- | ford, Warwick, Dykes and Dowell. The ' Club will be represented by McDonald, Winchester, Sherman, Ferguson, Lyons, iMansfieid, Kerr, Carlev, Wilson, Daly, and Robinson.

Shooting Committee.—The Shooting Committee of the First Westland Rifles has selected the following to represent them in the match against the Survey Office on Xmas Day ;—Captain McGregor, Lieutenants Winchester and Parkhill, iCorprra'ls Sweeney and Hills, Privates W. Wallace, J. Wallace, K. Wallace, Andrews, Raine, Daly, Harker, Bonar, Leslie, Schramm, Warren and Clarke. The Jane Dougi'as.—The Jane Douglas Left for Bruce Bay last evening, among the passengers being Mr Joseph Taylor. A cargo of hemp from Mr Chinn’s mill will be brought up from the Karangua on her return trip.

The . New Year Sports and Axemen’s Carnival Committee met last evening in .the Aquatic Club room, Mr D. J. Evans being in the chair. It was reported that the logs procurable were unsuitable for tho requirements of the Carnival and Mr Baxter, who was present, undertook to supply’ them. Messrs Mclntosh, Kirkwood, Jones and McGregor were appointed a ground’s committee. It was reported that Mr G. Lafein had agreed to take snapshots of the competitors in events for the purpose of reproducing them in the ‘Weekly Press.
