The Choir of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church will visit Kokatahi on Sunday afternoon when they will render special Xmas music at the afternoon service in the local church.

The members of the Ladies’ Sewing Guild who visit WYitJand .Hospital every fortnight for the purpose of doing sewing and mending work for the institution, have for the past five years been conveyed by motor car to and from the town- to Westland Hospital by Messrs Newmans Motors Ltd., a, car Seine always at their disposal when required. Yesterday afternoon the Guild took the,opportunity to make a small presentation to Mrs W. Newman to express in a small way their appreciation of the kindly service so freely rendered over the long period of years.

Horse owners who came forward so generously with their entries —for the first day of the Christmas meeting of the Westland Racing Club, have been as loyal in their support in regard to the acceptances. The list appears in this issue, and it will be noted there are very few departures from the original entry. In three or four events all horses nominated have been accepted tor, so that it is evident good fields will prevail throughout the meeting. Not only does the Club greatly appreciate the wholehearted support extended to it. but. is also pleased at the compliment paid its veteran handicapper, Mr J. Noble, of Reefton, in the splendid acceptance of his weight adjustments. Everything seems to point to the Club enjoying a most successful meeting for the inauguration of the new stand and appointments.

A most successful Christmas cake and fancy sale was held by All Saints’ Ladies’ Guild in the Pari h Hall yesterday afternoon. Arrangements were in the capable hands of Miss Thorne and Mrs Bone, who, ably assisted by other members of the Guild had been working hard for some weeks past iii preparation, and their efforts were rewarded with success, the sum of £l7 being received.
Signs of the holiday season approaching were manifest at the railway station this morning, when there was quite an exodus of passengers for the East Coast. The number included several school teachers who were going home for the long term vacation. The influx of visitors will now be beginning also. several hotels and resorts are well booked up over the Christmas and New Year holidays .
Thomas Lowry, single, one of the unemployed Workers engaged in disnianti'ihg the old Aliauta bridge, met with an accident on Thursday afternoon. In stepping hfudc he apparently forgot that there was n beam overhead, and he struck this with some force, which caused him to lose his balance. ,In falling, he struck an old pile with his hip, before being thrown into the river. He was conveyed to the Grey Hospital, suffering,’ it is understood, with a fractured hip.

O n behalf of the Westland County Council, Mr M. Keenan, County Chairman, has complied with the suggestion from the Mayor of Hokitika, and has opened a list at the County Office foi subscriptions to augment the amount available weekly for expenditure in the County under No. 5 Scheme. All subscriptions received and the particulars of the expenditure as it proceeds, nraj be seen in detail at the County Office, where the hooks will he open for in spection. and later he subject to Government audit. Amounts may be paid in a lump sum, or in weekly and monthly amounts to assist in augmenting the available funds ior work in necessitous cases as they become known. No doubt there will be general financial support to this humanitarian scheme to assist the needy.

The District Engineer, of the Public Works \ Department, Mr T. A. Johnston, recently returned from an inspection of the Highway and other works in progress in South Westland. He states that the Main South Hoad right through to Weheka is in firstclass order, and that the booking at the tourist resorts for the Christmas Sea/son, both at the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers, is very heavy. Mr Johnston pointed out, that it may not lie generally known that all the main streams southwards as far as the Cook River, have been bridged and that unless some exceptionally heavy floods or cloudbursts occur,, there is nothing to hold up any cars. Mr Johnston also intimated that the visitors to Hokitika should he reminded that’the Lake Kanieri road has now been extended as far as Dorothy Falls, and that given the mht weather conditions, the run to the Falls and Lake Kanieri, is one of particular interest.
