WORKLESS YOUTH
TEACHING PROFESSION.
VIEWS OF COLLEGE COUNCIL
AUCKLAND, Dee. 16
Reference to the decision of the Education Department not to accept probationer teachers in 1f,'32 was made at a meeting of the Auckland University College Council when the registrar j(Mr M. R. O’Shea) presented a report on the subject. “It is possible,” the report said, “that under the present circumstances a number of scholars may decide to return to a secondary school and 4 sit for. a number of subjects for the teacher’s C certificate. It should be pointed out that they will be an a much better position., to obtain entry to the teaching profession next year if they come to the University and take a portion of the degree. In the greater .competition for entry to the profession next year a strong section obtained toward the degree would be of great assistance to the applicant.” “That depends entirely upon the age of the student.” said Mr J. 11. Mahon (headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School). Jn the 'case of the younger boys, say from HU to 18 years, I would advise them to star at school for a further period, because they would then have the opportunity to take posts as prefects, and in the cadets, which would give them an opportunity to develop character and personality.” Miss A. L. Louden, headmistress of the Epsom Girl’s Grammar School, said that there had been twenty-four applicants lor probationerships this year, and in’many cases their position was serious. “As the decision to make no appointments in 1932 seems irrevocable, girls should equip them selves further by staying another year in the sixth form and offering themselves a s candidates for 1933. when undoubtedly. they should have first consideration,” said Miss Louden “This extra year will be counterbalanced by the promised curtailment of the period of training.”
