THE UNEMPLOYED
(To the Editor.)
Sir—As your sub-leader on the above subject in Saturday’s issue, is ? likely to create an erroneous impression, kindly grant me space in -which to state the true position. For this week the work is rationed as follows: —Two day men receive on day; three day men, one-and-a-half and some two days ; four day men, three and some three-and-a-half days. I am unable to say whether the extra £45 granted by the Unemployment Board is included in- the above but if notj it will scarcely benefit those who are off ilOxt week. The Return' Soldiers’ Association by offering ft 50 per cent, subsidy has secured s«v B era! day’s work for inch of its mein* hern, but nothing bus, @o far, been done for the remainder of the unemployed men, and, in . consequence, the married men who received li days this week and are off next will receive the munificent sum of 18s 9d to tide them over the festive season. As to the amout of work provided by the, Westland local bodies, the less said about it the better, as if amounts to nil. Yours etc., Scheme No. 5. HOKITIKA, 14.12.31.
