UNEMPLOYMENT AT CHRISTMAS

URGENT NEED FOR HELP. A PERSONAL APPEAL FROM '•• v '" 'C' MR COATES;'' ' " ‘ ' The .'following appeal has been issued by the. Eight Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister iii Charge of Unemployment:— ' Our country approaches Christinas with little short of 50,000 uneiiiployed men. Until we .can absorb them in useful employment, only a few days’ work in the weekcan he provided from the limited funds available. Many homes are deprived of necessities, let alone even the simplest luxuries. One day’s work will mean the difference between privation and a little comfort in the home. 1 My appeal is that every citizen who is fortunately in employment to-day should seek a way to help Offer a day’s employment if this is possible for, let us say, 10s. A card to “The Officer in Charge

Employment Bureau, Labour Department, Hokitika,” will enable a man to lie put 'll touch with you. Or if work can he offered to a woman, that officer will gladly arrange for the services of someone who needs the work and tlie wage.

Some who are prepared to help will not he able to offer actual' work. T am confident that They will respond generously to oird or more of' the. appeals for cash note before the ' public on behalf of social service organisations. Others, again, will he able to help by sending some goods, • whether farm produce- or clothing or anything tha t' is needed by the relief depots. If these people -communicate witli the Mayor of the nearest borough, T am sure they will be told bow their gifts may be best directed. (Signed) •T. G. COATES.
