The adjourned annual meeting of the Westland Competitions Society trill he held on Monday afternoon next at 4.30 o’clock at the County Chambers.
7he handicaps for the Hokitika races are due to-day and acceptances close at 8.30 o’clock on Friday evening next. Meantime matters at the racecourse in connection with the new stand accommodation are being rapidly advanced, and everything will be in good order for the race meeting.

The applications from stalkers lor blocks in the South Wetsla-nd area under the control of the Westland Acclimatisation Society are reduced considerably in number this season.
Some English stalkers for whom blocks had been reserved, now advise they are unable to come. The blocks as at present allocated for this season are : Block 3, M. Keith Richards, Rotorua; Block 5, Colonel Swayne, England; Block 7, Captain A. Richardson. Taupo: Block 8, Olliver Bros., Otago; Several block's remain open for ap-
plication, and it is likely another two will be taken up in the early future.
At the Westport Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday before Messrs J. H. Harkness and A. G. Marshall, J’« P., Robert Philp, of Scddonville, was charged:“That on or about January 31, 1929, and on divers dates between then and May 11, 1931, at Seddouville, he did steal sums of money totalling £22-5 os 3s. the property of the Mokihinui Valley Medical Association. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the next sitting of the Supreme Court- at Westport for sentence. Bail was allowed in £IOO self and one surety of £IOO or two of £SO.
The local hotelkeepers and others are rendering every assistance to the Westland Racing Club at the forthcoming race meeting. Following a suggestion by Mr A. Nancekivell ait- the time of the fire which destroyed the grandstand, the hotelkeepers have decided to conduct the booths for the benefit of the Club. No. 1 booth will be in charge of f> Mr A. Nancekivell of the Railway Hotel, and No. 2 of Mr J. J. Mclntosh, Red Lion Hotel. There have been many proposed gifts of wines and spirits from the hotelkeepers and various houses, as well as beer and cordials from the manufacturers. The ready help is much appreciated by the Club as the financial -assistance will be very helpful in this time of stringency. The publ.cians’ bars will be centred in the new stand, which is now completed practicably.

A sitting of the Westland Licensing Committee was held yesterday at noon when there were present Messrs F- McGregor (chair) J. Gocdal], R. Chesterman and J. B. At a meeting of the Greymouth Competitions Society the Treasurer, 'Mr Keating, detailed the cost attached to the competition festival, He stated that the total receipts for_ this year amounted to £3lB 2s lid, the main items being dcor takings and reserves £216 os 9d, and entries £4B 10s. Expenses had amounted to £337 judge’s fees being £lO2 19s 6d. The result of the festival showed a loss r ’'° 1 " Bd. which was reduced by special discounts to about £l4. Altogether it had been a good year, the day takings being satisfactory, but the demonstration night had been a fiasco. The first demonstration night had brought in only £33 l£s 6d. nnl the second only £26 13s 6d. In the previous years these demonstration nights bad usually been good far something over £BO. It was rs lved fu view of the reserve fund having become exhausted to make an appeal to the general public for financial assistance.
A pleasant function was held at the residence of Mr G. Hatch, Seweh' St. on Thursday evening, when the members of 'St. Mary's Club met to say fareweiT to Mr T. Hatch, who commenced his new duties on the “Grey Argus” today. A presentation in the form of a wallet was made by the President, Mr J. (Stopforth, who paid a tribute to Mr Hatch for the many services he had rendered the Club. Laudatory remarks were also made by others members. Mr Hatch thanked his fellow-members for Their token of appreciation, and expressed his regret that he was leaving Hokitika, but was pleased to have the opportunity of increasing his experience in the journalistic profession. Supper was dispensed, and musical and elocutionary items were contributed by the members. TVi'th the singing of Auld Lang Syne and He’s a Jolly Good Feliow, a pleasant function terminated. Prior to his departure the members of St. 'Mary s Choir made him a presentation of a fountain pen as a mark of appreciation for his services to that Society. Mr Sanders, who made the presentation, expressed the regret of member at ’losing so valuable a member. Miss A. Daly, organist, supplemented Mr Sanders remarks, and thanked Mr Hatch for his past services. Mr Hatch suitably replied.
