DIPHTHERIA
OUTBREAK. TEN CASES NOTIFIED. ASHBURTON, December 7. An outbreak of diphtheria in its most virulent form has made its appearance in Ashburton, and the Convent School, which was attended by several of the children who contracted the malady, has been closed. During the past ten days' eight cases have been notified in the borough, and tivo in Allenton, and since the first notification one child has died. The .health authorities are taking strict measures to prevent the spread of the disease, and all contacts have been isolated. Warning has also ibeen issued to parents to keep a close watch for any children displaying any symptoms of diphtheria or showing signs of sickness. WORST OUTBREAK SINCE 1926.
The outbreak is reporteed to be the worst since -the 19176 .epidemic, when over fifty cases were notified for the period between April and September. At that time, however, the disease was in a much milder form.
One “carrier” lias been located and isolated, and every child who attended the Convent School who showed the slightest sign of a sore throat has been “swobbed,” and bacteriological tests are being made of the results.
