BOOKMAKING CHARGES
£2OO FINES INFLICTED." STRATFORD, December 7. Fines of £2OO each were imposed by Mr Tate, S.M., on Dominick Sisarich, Felix' Pobrica and William Henry Lash on charges of bookmaking. The charges were a sequel to a police raid on October - 1. All -the defendants pleaded guilty. Counsel for the rle-. fence made a strong plea for' a lesser; penalty, and referred to the law as hypocritical. Evidence was g’ven by the town clerk as to, the excellent character of 'Sisarich and Pobrica. The Magistrate said that the Court was not concerned with the actions of the legislature. ' The police and the Court had -fco administer the law, not to criticise it. He declined to reduce the penalties. Walter Ernest Watkins was ordered to pay l8s" costs on a charge of being found in a common gaming-house without lawful excuse.
