A supposed hoax, which nearly turned into a tragedy occurred in Central. Park, Whangarei. Two -bank clerks were sitting under the trees o.iting their lunch when another young man arrived. He stripped ltd appeared in the latest bathing costume. “1 can’t ,swim,” lie confided to the others. In his togs he ooked so athletic that they did not believe him. ,“You jump in there. It isn’t very deep,” «thev said, pointing to the main channel. In he jumped. He was in difficulties immedi tely, ' is head bobbing up and down, and liecalled for help at each' emergence. For a space the boys on the bulk thought lie was joking.» Then realising the true position, they jumped in and rescued him.
There are signs of a diminution in L he plague of grass grub beetles in the Mane.watu and Gordon districts, - ear Te Aroha. but the rava.es of 'he pests hnve extended to ylmcst every farm in the -neighbourhood For the past month farmers Have had an anxious time. At night when the beetles do "their scoutig for food; they alight on trees in swarms, and any cattle in their path become very frightened,, .racing round the paddocks in nil alarming manner./ The premice of such enormous swarms indicates an even greater danger from both the grub and the .. beetle next rear. when. the. eggs deposited in the veil have, hatched. It is feared that unless some effort is made to check them, the insects will prove a menace to the dairying industry.
A fire started early last ni<rbt in Oobden at the residence of Air Wm. S. Harris, of the Harbour Board’s quarry staff, in Ward Street, but it was fortunately discovered in time tp avert serious damage. Being awakened a few minutes before midnight bv smoke, Mr Harris located the outbreak in a corner of the sitting rom. where there was a hook case. Flames Had reached to the ceiling, scorching the wall, but the application of a Quantity of water soon had the fire subdued .and the 'services of _ the Fire Brig'def Vho were cjtiifeklv on the scene, were “rendered unnecessary. The-extent of the damage would he between £lO and £ls.
