The general public, it- is hoped, will take some practical interest to night in the annual meeting of the Westland Competitions Society. This organisation has for its object the betterment of the- rising generation, and this awn should make an appeal to all. The Society should be made as strong as possible, by being fully representative of the people, and we are asked to states that new members and new comers willing to assist in the management will be welcomed. It is not unlikely that thwe will be vacancies to fill in respect to those who have left or are leaving the district, and for that reason the management will need strengthening. The Society has served a useful purpose as far as it has p;one, and it is capable of continuing that good work, and the better to do s >, larger public support will help. Probably the times are not as good as formerlv, but it -should he possible to adjust the operations to the changed conditions.. At the same time- it is advisable if not necessary, to 'secure the best judges finance will allow, so that the fullest encourage-
meat and advantage will he afforded competitors. Likewise, the awards must not l:e too niggardly if outside competitors are to he drawn here, not only to'add interest to the sessions, but also to stimulate competition. For these reasons a certain amount of finance must be assured, and in that respect those approving the good work of the Society can help by augmenting the membership. The annual festivals in the past have proved extremely popular and it would he well to see the interest, maintained. Jt is pleasing to know that many competitors in past seasons have done well, and have been able to compete successfully in the larger centres. There is always much latent- talent with the youth of the town, and the Competitions Society is a- meajns to bring it out and cultivate it. What has been done musically has been very helpful to the community at a time when canned music is in danger of outing the individual effort, and on this account alone the best support possible should be accorded the Society in its attempt to carry on the good work it Inis in hand.
