THEFT FROM A SHOWCASE, YOUTH PLACED ON PROBATION, TIMARU, December 3. With the assistance of another youth, Herbert Ernest Bennett, aged seventeen, removed two gold rings valued at 35s from the showcase* of George R.. Hayward, jeweller, in the Arcade. Bennett, who appeared to-day to face a charge of theft, was placed on probation for three years by Mr C. R. Orr Walker, S.M. Senior-Sergeant I. H. Matkieson stated that three young men, of whom accused was one, were walking along Stafford Street when it was alleged accused said, “I feel like pulling a job.” The two then, proceeded into the Arcade, when Bennett, assisted by one* youth named Marks, opened the showcase and stole the rings. These were recovered later hidden behind a fence at Caroline Bay. Bennett was certainly not a well-behaved boy, but his' parents were very respectable citizens. Marks had been charged at Wellington and placed on probation for two years. The Magistrate said it was a ca-se of Borstal or probation. He would give Bennett the benefit of the latter.
