HUGE TASK BEGUN

AX “ ALT,-ELECTRIC" BRITAIN. The Central Electricity Board's huge scheme • for simplified power transnUss:on throughout the country is over Halt' finished. So ispid has been the progress 10ward an “all-electric Britain” that the scheme is now expected to be finished well within the period allowed for—by lSu-t or 1935. This country, it is forecast by experts, will then be the cheap'est producer of electricity in the world. Some idea of the rate at which the scheme is being carried out can be gained from the fact that 2048 miles of way-leaves have already been obtained, out of a required total of 2687. This represents an increase since January 1 of 900' miles. All the way-leaves necessary for - primary transmission in Central Scotland and North-East England have been obtained, and with the exception of SouthWest England, the figures for the entire country are well above 80 per cent, of what is required. i The total value of contracts pin-ed by the board up to May 31 is more than £20,000,000.
