CANADIANS ANXIOUS
TRADE WITH NEW ZEALAND
VISITOR ’ S IMPRESSIONS.
DUNEDIN, November 30
“There is every desire on the part of the Government and the people of Canada to establish better relations with this country,” said Mr J. M. Thompson, who is a Canadian by birth and who has just returned to New Zealand from his homeland after a- tour of four months. He is strongly of the opinion that when the New Zealand elections are over and the new Government settled down in office the present trade treaty between the' two countries will be greatly revised and business relations will be revived on a much sounder and more satisfactory basis.
The general impression which prevailed, in Canada to day was that the depression was lifting and that a revival of trade to normal conditions was near, at hand, said AH Thompson.' The rising prices for wheat were 'stimulating confidence again, and there pvas a better feeling generally. In dealing with the question whether the Canadian people were coming under 'the influence of the United States,'Mr 'Thompson said that while there was no question that American customs and American culture wei’e affecting Canadians, because there was so much "mixing of the people from the two countries, the people over there in our brother Dominion were in some respects even more loyal to the British Empire. than New Zealanders. He pointed out that the tourist traffic between America, and Canada was enormous, ' no fewer than five million automobile' tourists being registered every year for trips to Canada.
