SAWMILLING
(From the National Review)
This Sawmilling is the life for mej 1 can lie on my back ’neath the widespreading tree. We’ve no .orders on hand, so there’s nothing to cut— The trade that we had has now all gono Phut. The last order received was priced as 0.8., But they insisted on having the heart from the tree. They squeezed us right down to the best price for cash, And we never got -paid, so now we’ve gone smash! But what does it matter? We are deep down in debt, And the more timber we cut the deep-
er we get. The Royalties are owing and Interest past due, Our assets worth nothing, so what can they do? Trams want renewing from bush to the mill, And last month’s wages--we are owing them still. Our spanking new planner the Agents took back, And there’s nobody left to be given the sack. As I lie on my back in a vision I see The good Old Age Pension awaiting for me.
