A CRITICISM

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—-After listening to Mr Greenislade’s weak attempt at a political •sp-ech, we certainly expected to hear something about the business programme of Coalition from Hon. E. A. Ransom. However his speech could he summed up as “All chaff and no oats.” As a business man he is a great farmer. He stated the land is our salvation. Quite right. He tells us about his marvellous pumice farm of 50 cmvs but forgets to give details. Before I would lend money on his farm I would want to know the cost per acre ?o bring that farm into production, and, -secondly, how many acres to the cow and the gross profits and net profits of this farm before I gave an opinion as to whether he i§ working on a business proposition or not. There is plenty of land in New Zealand that could be made dairy farms but it is the overhead cost of bringing into production. and overhead (manuring etc.) in farming later that makes it a bad spec. Then finally to help the wonter, what use are these farm® to them without capital. Does he intend to sell them and by private trading and profiteering balance the budget or is lie going to act as a benevolent Father Christmas,

Why do the Coalition candidates refuse to. give straightout statements of their intended methods to re-estab-lish the finance of this country. Generalities are nice and vague but in the present parlous state of New Zealand we want straight business facts, We also want to know how our credit stands in England, If Coalition balance their budget (by oppression or other means) what promise of help or loans have they from England?

Yours, J. BURTON-WAR NO CK Hokitika, 30:11:31.
