A woman’s plea of guilty at Leeds, in 'respect* to a self-inflicted illegal operation, after having seven, children in fourteen years, and fearing another owing to poverty, led Justice McCardie to criticise the law.
“Britain is already over-populated,” be said. “Knowledge of birth control 'should be (widely extended, particularly among the - poor. The law regarding illegal operations should be substapitiallly amended!, 'because it is not in accord with modem conditions.” The woman was bound over for 1 two years.
