Time 1. 12 2-5. THE TOTE AT FLEMINGTON. The totalisator has bepn strongly established in the favour of the betting public (says the “Australasian"). Tt was subjected to its real test on Melbourne Cup day, and it came through the ordeal with honours. It worked all through the meeting without the slightest hitch. The machine was handicapped from the outset by the fact that it had to be operated by an untrained staff. It did nut quite realise expectations, as there were delays iii issuing tickets and further delays in paying the dividends. Minor defects in the organisation have been remedied as experience brought them to f glit, and as ;the staff lias become more experienced in themselves, consequently they are issuing tickets at a much faster rate than was the case a week or two ago. The betting public has become more accustomed to the rules governing totalisator batting, and does not hold up operations by asking for a horse instead of a number. r l hat has greatly redacted the congestion at tin' issuing windows. On the tour days £126,738 passed through the machine.

CARBINE'S SONS. Commenting upon the fact that the Melbourne Cup winner,, White Nose, is a grandson of Carbine, an Australian writer says :— Spearmint was undoubtedly the best horse Carbine sired during his English stud-career., but Pistol was probably second best. Pistol wase out in an exceptionally good year, as he had to meat Sceptre and Ard Patrick in the classics. He managed to divide Sceptre and Ard Patrick in the Two Thousand Guineas. With -Sceptre and Ard Patrick out of the way he would have been a comfortable winner of the Two Thousand Guineas. Perhaps it was just as wen for Australia that Sceptre was there. Had he been a Guineas winner he would have been deprived of a great sire. In his book Mr George Lambton says Sceptre and Ard Patrick “were a pair of giants, both in performances and stature.” Well, Pistol was a good second to ‘Sceptre, and had Ard Patrick behind him, so he must have been a really high-class horse, HIS -SIGHT WAS GOOD. An incident which might have had a dramatic efieqt on the ‘Melbourne Cup occurred at Flemington shortly before the race. The trainer of another runner in the Cup waved a white handkerchief in front of White Nose, and on Ins right side. Fortunately, White Nose noticed the fluttering handkerchief, otherwise a protest would have been entered against his win. White Nose has a (peculiar scum over his right eye, and the trainer in question thought that he might be blind in that eye. In that case lie would have been disqualified from running under V.R.C. rules, which debar one-eyed horses.
