THE FIRST TEST. AUSTRALIA 450. BRADMAN SCORES 226. . (Australian Press Association.) BRISBANE, November 29. A great crowd of twenty thousand which js a record for the Brisbane Cricket Ground, saw Australia on a good wicker, set a formidable task for the South Africans in the test. There was some sparkling play. There was a sweltering heat. The Australian innings occupied 391 minutes and realised 450. Bradman, in breaking Trumper’s record score of 215 against the South Africans made 226. He hit twenty-four fours, and batted 227 minutes. After a great innings he was deceived by Vincent. Oldfield, who was unconquered, gave an admirable display of excellent scoring shots, and his partnership with Bradman added sixty. He batted 117 minutes, hitting one six and five fours.
The visitors maintained a determined attack, and the fielding was never loose, Cameron’s smart wicket-keeping being a feature. The South Africans suffered an early batting setback, three good wickets falling for forty-nine runs. Then began a solid partnership between Mitchell and Taylor, which remained utibroken at the end of the day, and itgave the visitors a hope of approaching jAustrul'a’s formidable score. Their position necessarily restrained the visiting bqtsmen. The play was quiet for most of the afternoon, until an hour before stumps, when both Mitchell and Taylor hit out, particularly the latter. The Australian fielding was good, though Oldfield’s wicket-keeping display was below the standard. He missed three chalices. Buns were always difficult to obtain, owing to the consistent bowling. On„y one run was scored off Griinmett s first six overs. Scores : A USTR ALIA .—First Innings.
