TROUBLE AHEAD
POSITION IN INDIA. AGITATION AMONG PEASANTS. (United Press Association. —By Electric “Telegraph.- —Copyright.) (Received this day at 11.15 a.m.) CALCUTTA, November 20. Simultaneously with Lord Lothian’s statement in the House of Lords of firm action to deal with the revolutionary movement, there were significant large scale demonstrations and the showing of the Flag by British and Indian troops at several centres throughout India, which were prominent !in last year’s civil disobedience campaign. In Calcutta, over three thousand troops with armoured cars inarched through the crowded Indian quarter. Meanwhile the Congress agitation among the peasants in the United Provinces urging them to start a campaign for non-payment of taxes is rapidly reaching a head. Serious trouble is anticipated and drastic action is needed.
Stix thousand peasants at a meeting approved of the campaign and pledged themselves to withhold payments of rents and revenue till the Government has made more remissions.
