It wa.s stated that the constant appeals to the cupidity of the people of New Zealand were fast becoming a scandal, and that the- advantages of raising money for public purposes by means of art unions' were far outweighed by the evidence of a- spirit that was destructive of thrift and the moral of the people. The Synod passed a 1 resolution protesting against the flooding of tne country \yith lotteries, which were fostering the- gambling spirit, and offered deadly facilities to' the young people to indulge in a spirit universally deiri. mental to tlm highest citizenship, and further urged its members to “leave severely alone this dangerous thing.”
