REMUERA SHOOTING

COULTON’S AIR PROPOSALS

(By Telegraph—Pe r Press A ssociation)

WELLINGTON, Nov. 2b,

Writing to the Press Assn, on January 17th. la£t and giving his address as c/o 0. R. Slack, Beach Road, Papakura; ,L. Coulton gave particulars of a proposed attempt on the tnen existing Kingsford Smith record from England to Australia and continuing direct on to New Zealand.

He said he was held up at the moment for a certain amount of financial assistance. His proposition was to sell the story of the flight, the offer only to hold good if the existing record from England to Australia were broken, .and he reached New Zealand jivithin fourteen days after his departure from London. The flight was to be done in a specially built machine which was planned to reach Australia in five days and New Zealand in ten.

In reply to a request for further information, Coulton wrote on February 9th. enclosing a rough sketch of the route he proposed to follow. He was trying to raise £2OOO which he estimated would cover the cost of the ’plane, collapsible boat, wireless set and about four months training in England, in the finer points of navigation and wireless operating. He said he was 21 years of age and learned to fly in Perth, Western Australia, two • year® previously. He had done practically all his flying in Australia. He had the flight under consideration for about 18 months and had every confidence that the flight would be successful. t Later on he visualised a flight from England to New Zealand via Bermuda, Colon and Pitcairn Island.
