The owner of a wireless set had an alarming experience at Christchurch on Sunday when as lie was connecting a clip to one of the terminals of the B battery, an explosion took place. The battery is of the alkaline type in which the solution is covered with a film ol oil to stop evaporation; and the reason ascribed by the owner to explain the explosion is that the hot weather must have vaporised some of the oil, which was ignited by the spark formde when the clip was approached to the terminal. The battery had just been charged, so that the tension would be high. The explosion was like the firing of a gun and the oil, which caught alight, was thrown over the owner’s arms and face, causing minor injuries. His eves escaped.

Last night was cold and wintry with occasional showers, and the weather -showed very little improvement this morning. The barometer continues to give a low reading, without any change from yesterday.
