Although the canvassing for subscriptions had not been thoroughly organised; the Hokitika. District Prospecting Association has recived the sum of £3O 12s by way of donations from the public. This was considered quite satisfactory by the Committee of the As-sociaton at its meeting last evening, when it was decided that the canvass be thoroughly undertaken. The sum of £5, by way of members’ annual subscriptions is also in hand, and an account has been opened at the Hokitika Savings Bank.

A demonstration was given in Hampden Street yesterday afternoon in the presence of Mr M. Keenan, County Chairman, members of the County and Borough Councils, and officials of both bodies, of the latest type of Ford tipping truck with tlie improved hydraulic lift. Some loads of material were brought out from the Sale Street pit and tipped in a few seconds on the pathway. A load covered about 4o yards, and was spread evenly throughout, the operation being manipulated from the cab of the machine by the driver. No extra labour, wa.s necessary for the spreading, which was completed by the machine.

During the past few days,, some publicity has been given in the column? of the “Guardian” to ithe position of the Swimming Club and the sehoo’s with regard to the Club’s proposal to encourage swimming among the. school children. The matter will reach a definite stage this evening when a conference'between officials of the Club and representatives of the schools in question will be held.

In past years assistance has been given to prospectors, in spasmodic ef-

forts, with a view to aiding the industry in Westland. Grants were received from the Government, bid in some instances, the men did not give a full return of service. With unemployment in such straits as it is today, the newly-formed Prospecting Association will endeavour to obviate this by assisting only those men who are capable, and can be depended upon to render service commensurate with the aid given by the Association.

At this stage in the early activtiies of the new-formed Hokitika District Prospecting Association it may be of interest to trace what is intended to be dene in the way of assisting prospectors, as well as unemployment, in this district. By public donations, members’ subscriptions, IJnemploy ment Board subsidy, and it is hoped, by an additional grant from the Board, capital will be raised to place the proposal on a sound, working basis. The subsidy will be 30s a week for married men and 15s a week for single men, and this, together with assistance from the Association, - will enable the men to undertake the work. The men n're required to provide their own tools and equipment, but the Association is trying to meet them in this respect, by endeavouring to obtain , equipment from the Defence Department. What gold is struck will be the property of the prospectors, but. when over £3 a week is being thus earned, the Board’s subsidy will be discontinued.
