DISCOVERY OF GOLD
REEF nST KARAMEA DISTRICT. Recently there has been discovered in the Karamea district, north of Westport, a gold-bearing reef , said to be one of the 'widest in the history of mining. It has been proved to be gold bearing over 20 feet in width, and is reported to be gold bearing, by simple panning off, for a further 27 feet, making ‘an estimated payable reef width of 47 feet. One .sample taken .by a reliable prospector assayed gold and silver to the value of £34 per ton of quartz, and samples taken by a well-known mining engineer assayed an average of 46s lOd per ton of quartz, over 12 feet in width (taking the value of gold at only £4 per ounce). At the southern end of the system the reef is reported 10 feet in width and samples at this end are reported to have assayed soz per ton. It is understood that Mr H. R. Young, of Westport, a. candidate for the Avon seat, is the vendor, and with the assistance of Mr Robert English, a company has been successfully floated to test and prove the claim. Should the investigations being . made prove satisfactory, the find must rank as one of the biggest payable reefs found in Australia or New Zealand.
