GRANT DECREASED

TO AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE.

'COUNCIL’S EMPHATIC PROTEST.

(By Telegraph—Per Press Association)

PALMERSTON' N., November 19

Deep cdnceni at the curtailment of the grant by the Government for the maintenance of the Massey Agricultural College, was expressed at a meeting of the Council.

'Subsequently, the chairman, Sir George Fowlds. slated that the Council had given very serious consideration to the matter and had definitely to face the reduction of the grant, this year, from ifils, ooo to £12,625. This was £875 more than the ten per cent, cut anticipated, for which they had made provision largely by a reduction in salaries. The proposal to reduce the grant next year to £IO,OOO would be disastrous to the College. Any such reduction would necessitate the abandonment of research work. That would bp ca.iamatous fbr the agricultural industry of the Dominion. ‘Sir George Fowlds pointed to the great value of the benzol test, for detecting hairiness in wool, already produced at the Coliege. The Council authorised Sir George Fowlds, with a sub-committee, to make strong representations to the Government to prevent the curtailment of usefulness ,by the College which would necessarily be involved if the contemplated drastic, reduction of the grant was carried into operation.
