SPORTS RESERVE
TENNIS CLUB’S BEQUEST. SCHOOL COMMITTEE SEEKS CONTROL. Application for a lease- of an area of reserve in Park Street was made to the Hokitika District High School by the Hokitka Lawn Tennis Club last evening. The Club advised that it desired this, land' for the purpose of courts. It was prepared to take a lease, possibly at £1 per annum. It requested the Committee to forward its request to the Education Board. Mr Shannon: I move that the idea, be not entertained. That ground may be of more value to the,' School later, and I do not want to see it get away from our control.
The, Chairman (Mr Armstrong): They want it for a term; but we can only lease it by the year. The Secretary said the Committee had no title to it, ais it did not even belong to the Education Board, but wa.s set aside by the Government for government purposes. Mr Richards said that they Had therefore been under a delusion all along, and hod been collecting fees for the Department. t
The Chairman suggested that they send the request on to the Board asking that, if they lease it, it he from year to year at a rental of £5.
The Rector (Mr Menzies) said he would like to see something definite done whereby the School might acquire the land, mainly as a sports area. The School ground at present was wholly inadequate for its purpose. On the motion of Mr Shannon, it was- decided that they interview the Mayor (Mr G. Perry), who was chairman of the old Education Board at the time it was abolished, and who was cognisant of the conditions surrounding the ground in question.
