SHOT HT DEMENTED
PATIENT
Particulars of the death of Dr Martin livelier, who for many years practised in Auckland, have been received in a letter from Los Angeles. Dr Keller was fatally shot on October 1 by a demented patient at the Glendale Sanatorium, where he was director. The assailant heard that Dr Keller was visiting patients on the fourth floor, and he shot the doctor as he left a room. The best surgeons operated on Dr Keller in an effort to check the bleeding. Dr Keller’s wife, Dr Florence Keller who was a member of the Auckland ■Hospital Board from 1913 to 1921, was operating at the White Memorial Hospital at the time of the shooting. It was at this institution that Dr Martin Keller became dean when he left Auckland in 1921. He later became director of the Glendale institution, which b controlled by the Seventh Day Adventists. ' More than 3000 people attended the. memorial church service to Dr Keller. Nurses attended in uniform, and more than 100 doctors were present. It took one hour and a half for the congrega tioji to file past the casket. The cortege comprised about 500 cars. Dr Milton Hare, who is a New Zealander, has been appointed medical superintendent at Glendale in place ot Dr Keller. Many members of the staff at the hospital are from Australia and •New Zealand.
