TRAM KILLS, CHILD. (By Telegraph—Per Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, November 4. Allan' James Fine, aged one year and nine months, was killed instantly th s evening when he ran under the front wheels of a tram-car at New Brighton. The boy, with two sisters, alfeo young, was standing on the footpath when the tram stopped to pick up passengers. Immediately the tram started, the boy ran from the footpath ill front of the car, and was crushed to death before anything could be done to save him.
HOUSEBREAKING SCHEMI
NEW PLYMOUTH, November 4
Produced from a sack and laid on the table, housebreaking tools made a formidable array in the Police Court to-day. They were found in a car, which had 'been driven from Wellington. As a result Charles Thomas Batkin was sentenced to six months’ hard labour ; Clarence Frank Boss to lour months; and James McArley was admitted to probation for two years. They had all pleaded guilty as rogues and vagabonds to unlawful possession of housebreaking implements, and to obtaining credit from hotelkeepers lor board at Wanganui and New Plymouth.
ATTACKED BY BULL
AUCKLAND, November 3
Painful injuries were received by n farmer, Thomas Austin. who was savagely attacked by a bull on his property at Brookby. As be was driving a cow out of a paddock the bull turned upon him and knocked him to the ground. The animal had been dehorned, but it stamped upon the prostrate man until it was driven off by Austin’s' sous, who saw his plight. It was found that Austin had three nbs broken and was extensively bruised.
BANK MERGER
WELLINGTON. November 3.
A cable message received, to-day from the Australian Bank of Commerce says that all transfers of shares should be lodged not later than November 14th. so that they may be registered before the company amalgamates with the Baltic of New South WaAs. Shareholders in the Australian Bank of Commerce Limited, will be ..entitled to shares m the Bank of New South Wales, according to the number of shares they hold in the Australian Bank ot Commerce, Limited, on November 16th.
STATEMENT CONTRADICTED. WELLINGTON, November 5. Mr E. Bucbulz (Chairman of the Wellington Stock Exchange) commenting on a statement by Mr H. E. Holland, Leader of the Labour Party, in the Town Hall last night, that tl ltJ evidence tendered to the Special Economic Committee on behalf of He Stock Exchanges favoured interest reductions, said the statement was inaccurate. Wellington Stock Exchange expressed to the committee a reverse opinion, more especially in regard to ,the reduction of inteorst on Government securities. Mr Holland was a member of that Committee. GOVERNOR-GENERAL. ASHBURTON, November 5. Hie Governor-General, who lias been staying at Longhead) since Monday, visited Ashburton to-day and was accorded a civic welcome by the Mayor, (Mr Woods) and County Chairman (Mr Withall). He attended a gathering of schoolchildren in the Domain, visited the hospital, attended the Agricultural Show in the afternoon, and goes goes on to Christchurch in the evening.
