V.R.O. RACES. MELBOURNE CUP jWON BY WHITE NOSE. * (Australian Press Association.) MELBOURNE, November 3. There was delightful weather to-day, and an enormous attendance at the V.R.O. races at Flemington, including a number of New Zealanders. Taciturn, the stable mate of the National Steeples winner, Rakwool, finished brilliantly and won the Cup Hurdles in the last stride. Sweet Lyra led always in the Nursery Handicap. She is drained >y Prince Dayton’s monitor, Mr S. Murphy. Bold Bid was prominent always in the Highweight Handicap, and won by a narrow margin. This is his first win. He cost 1200 guineas as a yearling. Dominant, the second horse, cost £6750 as a yearling. Giff was fourth early, but led in the last five furlongs of the Steeples, and won comfortably. Pentheus was second in the early f stages, and won the Yan Yean Stakes : nicely. He was second in the same race last year. Results:Cup Hurdles: —Taciturn 1; King Aural 2; Abvyian 3. Ten Started. Phar Lap had every chance to win, but he failed in the straight. , - The winner is owned by Mr B. McLaughlin, of Sleuth. Australia, and is trained in Adelaide. He finished second to Carry On in the last Australian -Cup. His rider, N. Ptrcival, has hitherto been unlucky in big races. He bad ft popular leception to-day. Percival stated after tbe race that fie had had a great run, and he was' always confident. Pike, rider of Phar Lap, said his mount had every chance to win, but he could not go when the pace was clapped on. Ashley Reed, rider of the New Zealand horse, Concentrate, said that Concentrate' was a certainty, and ho was beaten simply because he broke down when lie had the race won a fur N long from home.^ The sectional times for 'the Cup K were: First four furlongs, 56* secs.; next four, 50*j concluding four, 48|; final six, 1.132; last mile 1.39.
