MINING

The Alexander Mines report for October is as follows;—No. 3, North Intermediate, McVicar Reef. A level was started from the top of the rise recently risen 24 feet above the back of No. 3 North Level. After driving a few feet, a lode was struck, which is probably the continuation of “Me- ' Vicar” block on its downward course. The lode has been driven on 39 feet, the fact showing a strong body of good battery ore, 9 feet wide. This block '|)oks very promising, showing but a small variation in size for the distance driven. Value;—l32s Bd per ton, over a width of seven feet. No. 3 North Level, McVicar Reef:— This level was extended with the object of proving the stone going underfoot from the Intermediate above. At 32 feet from the crosscut, stone came in and has been driven on 19 feet; The face shows stone 4 feet 6 inches wide with every indication of getting the large body of ore driven on overhead as driving proceeds north. Gold can be seen freely in the ore, only one assay has been taken the result being 120 s per ton. Stoping :—Stoping has been confined to McKay Reef and McV;ear Reef. All stoping faces on McVicar Reef 'look well and give promise of increased tonnage s in the near future. Most of the ore obtained during the period came from A . - velopment .work on ‘‘McVicar” bioc.» driving being carried out continuously with two shifts. Two hundred and thirty-one tons have been sent to the battery from No. 3 Level “McVicar” and sixty-one tons from “Mullocky Creek” Reef. Gold returns;— The battery crushed 284 tons for a retnr*. of 2790z5. 16dwts. of melted; gold and the cyanide plant treated 176 tons of sand for a return of 69ozs. of bullion. Total estimated value is £l34i (exclusive of premium on the sale of gold in London and premium on ex- j change).
